Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb. http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/ | | Monday, July 7th, 2008 | | 11:10 pm |

I just had one of those great moments that bring complete clarity of mind—that really prove that I'm doing something right in my life. I had just attended a deaf culture event a good 15 minutes away from my dorm, and was waiting on the bus back. When it arrived and I stepped on, I saw my Sign Language teacher sitting there in one of the front seats, and she of course saw me. I was absolutely terrified. She is completely deaf, so her teaching style is a combination of signs, fingerspelling of words, and writing on a whiteboard to clarify her signs and fingerspellings. On the bus, there was no whiteboard for us to communicate with if I couldn't understand her signs or didn't know the signs I wanted. And I knew that she would want to chat with me. But it worked, ridiculously well. It was fantastic. I took the seat opposite her so that we were facing each other, and we signed back and forth for the entire 15 minute ride back to my dorm. We talked about our respective summer plans, where we lived now and where I would be living next year and with whom, what classes I will be taking this fall (and a little about what to expect in the next semester of sign language), and what I want to do with my life. When I didn't know a word, we would fingerspell or mime successfully, and I ended up pulling some new vocabulary away from the conversation. What made this exceptionally cool was that nobody else on the bus understood a word of what we were signing. It became this obscure, secret code that I felt totally bad ass for knowing. This is so fucking cool. | | Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 | | 10:49 am |

My courses for Fall 2007:African American History. The history of African Americans from African origins to present time; consideration of slavery, reconstruction, and ethnic relations from the colonial era to our own time. CAS AA371 A1 Mon, Wed, Fri 10:00am - 11:00am Heywood (meets with GRS AA871 & CAS HI 371/871)(Because SPHS text books don't teach us shit on the subject, and for some cultural diversity amongst my homies.) General PsychologyBasic introduction to the field of psychology; topics include theories and findings governing learning, memory, perception, development, personality, social and abnormal psychology. Students are required to participate as subjects in psychology studies. CAS PS101 E5 Mon, Wed, Fri 3:00pm - 4:00pm Dunne (Discussion CAS PS101 E5 Wed 11:00am - 12:00am)(A required course for my Psychology major [I'm doubling with English and Psychology] though it still, even as just a basic class, looks awesome.) The History and Practice of RhetoricRhetoric began in ancient Greece as a study of the practice of persuasive speakers. Over time, the canons of rhetoric were extended to writing. In this course, we will study the history and practice of rhetoric from the eloquence and wisdom of Cicero, the greatest orator of ancient Rome, to important treatises on rhetoric, such as the Institutio Oratoria of Quintilian, to Shakespeare’s recreation of Roman rhetoric in Julius Caesar, to contemporary political discourses that shape our own world. We will apply the wisdom of the rhetorical tradition to our own work as writers of academic essays. CAS WR100 K1 Tue, Thu 9:30am - 11:00am Campbell(My required basic writing class that has nothing to do with my English major requirements. I chose this from a wide range hoping that it is as awesome as Kadletz's AP Lang class was.) Cinema PhysicaConceptual introduction to physical law as portrayed in film. Quantitative understanding using simple estimates, elementary physics, and dimensional analysis. Kinematics; forces; conservation laws; heat and temperature; atoms, molecules and materials. Sample films: Speed; Armageddon: Independence Day; XMen; The Sixth Sense; Contact. CAS PY103 A1 Tue, Thu 11:00am - 12:30pm Cohen (Discussion CAS PY103 D3 Wed 4:00pm - 5:00pm; Lab CAS PY103 L2 Thu 4:00pm - 6:00pm)(The most awesome science course I've ever seen. Only 50 or so students can enroll, but because nobody else likes physics and thusly never perused the physics course pages and stumbled across this class, I managed to successfully sign up for it. It satisfies one of my two required science courses, and my single lab science requirement, and the lab portion of the class is: WATCHING THE ACTION/SCI FI MOVIES.) | | Friday, June 8th, 2007 | | 1:01 am |
I don't think that I properly articulated what I meant. The thing is, I don't feel like I deserved any of the awards up there, especially not the Weldon, and while I'd hoped that I would be called up for something, anything, the fact that I wasn't drilled home the point to me that I haven't lived up to the all-around success of my predecessors and hopefully my successors. And that conclusion was voted upon by committee. |
